Movember When Your Mustache Won't Fill In

A thin, gappy upper lip can still raise money for men's health this month. Here is how to grow it, style it, and start a careful routine for next year.

You can do Movember with a patchy mustache, and you should. The campaign starts clean-shaven on November 1 and asks you to keep whatever grows for the month while you raise money for men's health. Minoxidil will not fill the gaps in 30 days: the drug's own label says results take about 2 months at the earliest, and often 4.

Key takeaways

  • Movember funds work on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. You can grow, move, host, or donate.
  • Uneven mustache growth is mostly genetics and how your follicles respond to androgens, not effort.
  • OTC minoxidil is labeled for the top of the scalp only. Face use is off-label, so talk to a clinician first.
  • For a sparse Mo, keep the shape short and natural, tame it with a little wax, and treat filler pens as makeup.
  • Minoxidil residue is dangerous to cats. Apply away from pets, let it dry, and wash your hands.

What Movember is and how to join

The Movember Foundation runs a global men's health movement. It began more than two decades ago, when a few friends decided to grow mustaches as a way to get men talking about their health. Its stated mission is "Changing the face of men's health."

The foundation focuses on three areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. It says it has directed more than AUD $1.8 billion into that work so far.

Four ways to take part

  1. Grow a Mo. Sign up online or in the Movember app and choose Grow. Movember tells growers to start the month clean-shaven and keep the mustache all Movember long.
  2. Move for Mental Health. Run or walk 60 miles over the month. Movember ties the distance to the 60 men it says are lost to suicide every hour.
  3. Host a Mo-Ment. Put together a get-together with friends and raise money from it.
  4. Mo Your Own Way. Invent your own fundraising challenge.

Growers get a public fundraising page called a Mo Space. You set a target, write a line about why you're doing it, add a selfie, and share the link. A patchy before-and-after can be a better conversation starter than a perfect one.

If you would rather not grow, you can donate once or monthly through Movember's donation pages.

Why the upper lip can be the patchy part

Facial hair is androgen-dependent. Hormones like testosterone and DHT drive beard growth after puberty, but they do not act on every follicle the same way.

Nebraska Medicine calls genetics "the primary factor determining your ability to grow facial hair." The same article says growth depends on how many androgen receptors your follicles have and how sensitive those receptors are. That is why one man fills in early and another stays thin at the same age.

Hair researcher V. A. Randall of the University of Bradford has described androgen action as specific to the individual follicle. In plain terms, two follicles a centimeter apart can respond differently to the same hormone level. A gap under the nose, empty corners, or a thin center line usually reflects that follicle-by-follicle variation.

Other causes are less common but worth knowing. Nebraska Medicine lists alopecia areata, high stress, and scars that damage follicles. A sudden change in how your facial hair grows is a reason to see a dermatologist rather than reach for a product.

Our earlier piece on minoxidil for the sparse upper lip covers application on this zone in more detail.

What 30 days can and cannot do

Movember lasts one month. Minoxidil does not work on that clock, and it is worth being honest with yourself before you buy anything.

The over-the-counter 5% label for men says results may appear at about 2 months of twice-daily use. Some men need at least 4 months. The randomized beard trial most often cited, a 2016 study of 48 men using 3% minoxidil, measured its result over 16 weeks.

There is also an approval issue. That OTC label covers regrowth on the top of the scalp and says not to use the product on other parts of the body. A 2024 case report in SAGE Open Medical Case Reports describes facial hair enhancement as an off-label use. If you want to try it on your face, that is a conversation for a clinician.

Month 4—Label says stop and ask a doctor if there is no regrowth by now (scalp use)

The realistic plan: grow what you have this Movember, and if you and a clinician decide minoxidil makes sense, judge it by next year's campaign. A simple progress-tracking routine makes that comparison honest.

Styling a thin mustache for Movember

Sparse growth looks best when it looks intentional. Style is the tool you have this month.

Let it grow first

Resist trimming in the first week or two. Thin areas often look thinner when cut short, and longer hairs from the fuller sections can lie over gaps. Shape it once you can see where the hair actually is.

Shapes that suit sparse growth

Mustache styles for patchy growth
StyleWhy it works when thinUpkeepTools
NaturalNo hard lines to expose gaps; reads as "growing in"LowComb, scissors for stray hairs
PencilA narrow line uses only the densest strip above the lipHigh; edges need frequent cleanupDetail trimmer, mirror
Short brushEven short length hides density differencesMediumTrimmer with guard, comb
Light handlebarWax lets longer side hairs sweep over a thin centerMedium; needs wax dailyWax, comb

Wide, heavy shapes like the chevron or walrus need dense growth across the whole lip. With a patchy Mo, they tend to highlight the gaps.

Wax, combing and trimming

A small amount of mustache wax warmed between your fingers helps hairs from fuller areas cover thinner ones. Use a fine mustache comb to train hairs sideways from the center.

For the edge along the lip, small mustache scissors or a detail trimmer give more control than a full-size clipper. Trim with the mustache dry and combed straight down.

Fill-in options

A brow pencil or a beard filler pen is a cosmetic. It tints skin between hairs and washes off. It does not grow anything. Pick a shade slightly lighter than your hair, use short strokes in the direction of growth, and blend with a spoolie or comb.

Movember's Grow page doesn't list a rule about fillers. Use one for photos if it helps you feel good about sharing your page.

Using the month to start a careful routine

If Movember makes you want a fuller Mo next year, use November to get advice and set up safe habits, not to rush. Our beard starter protocol covers the full routine. Below is what matters most near the lip.

Check with a clinician first

The OTC label says to ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease, and the product is not for anyone under 18. Read our overview of facial minoxidil and heart safety before your appointment.

Applying near the lip

  1. Get a clinician's go-ahead. Face use is off-label, and your health history matters.
  2. Skip irritated skin. The label says not to use it on skin that is red, inflamed, infected, or painful.
  3. Keep it off your lips and out of your mouth. The label says to get medical help or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if it is swallowed.
  4. Keep it away from flame. The solution is flammable.
  5. Wash your hands. The American Academy of Dermatology advises soap and at least 20 seconds after applying.
  6. Use the labeled amount. The label says more product, or more often, will not improve results.

If your clinician approves a standard product, OTC 5% minoxidil is widely sold. Our product guide compares formats.

Irritation and side effects

The 2024 case report lists allergic or contact dermatitis as the most frequently reported side effects of facial use, along with itching, headache, and unwanted hair growth elsewhere. Its patient switched from liquid to foam after dry, flaky skin.

The OTC label says to stop and ask a doctor if you get chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, faintness, or dizziness. The same goes for sudden unexplained weight gain or swollen hands or feet.

Pets: cats are the big concern

The ASPCA says cats are especially sensitive to minoxidil and that very small exposures can cause life-threatening problems. Cats can be exposed by licking treated skin or grooming after lying on bedding with residue. The ASPCA also flags beard growth products with related ingredients.

  • Store products locked away from pets.
  • Apply in a closed room, then let it dry completely before touching a pet.
  • Keep cats off your face, pillow, and bed.
  • Throw tissues and applicators in a secured trash can.
  • If a pet may be exposed, call a vet or ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.

If exposure is hard to avoid in your home, the ASPCA suggests asking a medical professional about alternatives.

If your scalp is thinning too

Some men notice their hairline during Movember photo season. For scalp hair loss, a telehealth service such as Keeps is one way to get a prescription evaluation.

A licensed provider reviews each case; results vary.

Movember, not No-Nut November

Grow the 'stache. Keep everything else business as usual.

Two November challenges share a month, and people mix them up every year. To be plain about it: this site is not asking anyone to do No-Nut November. Movember wants a mustache, a fundraising page, and a few honest conversations. Your private life can carry on exactly as it was on October 31.

The science agrees with the shrug. There is no good evidence that abstaining from ejaculation grows a better mustache; a urologist reviewing semen-retention claims notes that "robust scientific data is limited." Facial hair depends on genetics and androgen-receptor sensitivity, and it changes over months, not over one month of willpower.

FAQ

Can minoxidil fill in my mustache before Movember ends?

No. The over-the-counter label says results may appear at about 2 months with twice-daily use, and some men need at least 4 months. The beard study most often cited ran for 16 weeks. Thirty days is too short to judge anything.

Is minoxidil approved for use on the face?

No. The over-the-counter 5% label covers regrowth on the top of the scalp and says not to use it on other parts of the body. Using it on the face is off-label, which is why a clinician should weigh in first.

Do I have to start Movember clean-shaven?

Movember's Grow page tells participants to start the month clean-shaven and keep the mustache all month. If your growth is sparse and that feels like a setback, the Move, Host and Mo Your Own Way options raise money for the same causes.

Is it cheating to use beard filler on a Movember mustache?

Movember's Grow page does not list a rule about it. A brow pencil or beard filler pen is a temporary cosmetic that washes off. The fundraising and the conversations are the point, not the hair count.

I have a cat. Can I use minoxidil near my upper lip?

The ASPCA says cats are especially sensitive and that very small exposures can be life-threatening. Apply in a closed room away from pets, let it dry fully, wash your hands, keep cats off your face and pillow, and ask a clinician about alternatives if exposure is hard to prevent. If a pet may be exposed, call a vet or ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.

Will skipping ejaculation in November help my mustache grow?

There is no good evidence for that. Facial hair depends mainly on genetics and on how many androgen receptors your follicles have and how sensitive they are, and it changes over months. Movember only asks you to grow a mustache.
