No-Shave November on Minoxidil: A 30-Day Plan for Patchy Growers
Thirty days will not show you what minoxidil can do, but it is a great month to start, measure honestly and give to a good cause.
If you start facial minoxidil on November 1, do not expect minoxidil results by November 30. The over-the-counter label says results may appear at 2 months, and some men need at least 4 months. What November can give you is a clean baseline, a steady routine and a month of untouched growth that shows your real density.
This plan breaks the month into four weeks, with what to do, what to track and when to stop. It also covers the cause behind the mustaches, the pet risk most people miss, and one very popular November myth.
Key takeaways
- Minoxidil is labeled for hair regrowth on the top of the scalp. Using it on your face is off-label, so check with a clinician first.
- The two placebo-controlled beard trials ran 12 and 16 weeks. One month is a starting line, not a finish line.
- Take baseline photos on day 1 and repeat them on day 30 with the same light and angle.
- Minoxidil is especially dangerous to cats. Let it dry fully and keep pets off your face and pillow.
- No-Shave November raises money for cancer causes. Consider donating what you would have spent on razors.
What No-Shave November actually is
No-Shave November is a fundraising campaign, not just a beard challenge. It began in 2009 as a Facebook effort by the Hill family of Illinois, in memory of their father, Matthew Hill. He died of colon cancer in November 2007.
The idea is simple: skip shaving and give the money you would spend on grooming to cancer prevention, research and education. Fight Colorectal Cancer (Fight CRC) now leads the campaign, after announcing in September 2024 that the Matthew Hill Foundation was closing. The campaign site lists Fight CRC, Man Up to Cancer and the Prevent Cancer Foundation as beneficiaries.
Fight CRC keeps the rules loose. The core rule is "don't shave," and some groups skip only certain areas. Teams are told to agree on their own rules before they start.
Movember is a separate charity
Movember is a different organization with a different symbol: the mustache. According to its own site, it raises money for men's mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. You can support either one, or both, while you grow.
Register or donate through the official campaign at no-shave.org. A simple move: add up what you would normally spend on razors, shave gel and a trim, and give that.
Honest expectations for 30 days on minoxidil
Start with what the drug is approved for. The Men's Rogaine 5% foam label lists one use: regrowing hair on the top of the scalp. It also tells you not to apply it to other parts of the body. Using it on your beard area is off-label.
There is some evidence, but it is small, and the decision belongs with you and a clinician.
What the beard studies show
| Source | Who | Dose and length | What it found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ingprasert et al., J Dermatol, 2016 | 48 men aged 20 to 60; 46 finished | 3% lotion, 0.5 mL twice daily on chin and jaw, 16 weeks | Higher hair count and better photo scores than placebo; hair diameter did not change significantly |
| Wattanawinitchai et al., J Dermatolog Treat, 2026 | 69 transgender men on stable hormone therapy | 3% minoxidil vs placebo twice daily, 12 weeks | Gains in beard and mustache density and hair diameter over placebo; adverse events minimal and similar between groups |
| Men's Rogaine 5% foam label (scalp) | Men 18 to 49 in the label study | Half a capful twice daily, 4 months | Results may show at 2 months; some men need at least 4 months |
Notice the time frames: 12 weeks, 16 weeks, 4 months. None of them is 30 days. A published review of topical beard therapies also points out that beard gains may be temporary and that longer follow-up is needed.
The 2026 trial is a useful signal that facial follicles respond, but its participants were on testosterone therapy. Results in men with naturally patchy beards may differ.
So why start in November
Because patchy beards are hard to judge when you keep shaving them. A full month of untouched growth shows where hair already grows, where it is thin and where it is truly bare. That map is your real baseline, and it makes month-four comparisons honest.
The 30-day No-Shave November plan
Before day 1, talk to a doctor or dermatologist about facial minoxidil, especially if you take blood pressure medication or have any heart condition. Then work through the month in four blocks.
Week 1 · Nov 1 to 7
Baseline and a gentle start
- Shave or trim to an even length on November 1, or start from where you are. Pick one and note it.
- Take baseline photos: front, left, right and chin-up. Use the same spot, the same light and the same distance every time.
- Choose one application time pair you can keep, such as after your morning wash and before bed.
- Apply to clean, dry skin only where you want growth. In the 2016 trial, men used 0.5 mL of a 3% lotion twice daily on the chin and jaw.
- Wash your hands well after each application, as the label directs.
Week 2 · Nov 8 to 14
Lock in the routine
- Do not add more product to speed things up. The label says more, or more often, will not improve results.
- Watch your skin. Redness, flaking or itching are reasons to pause and ask your clinician.
- Start basic beard care once the minoxidil has dried. Our explainer on when to apply beard oil around minoxidil covers the order.
- Set up your pet routine now, before it becomes a habit you skip. See the safety section below.
Week 3 · Nov 15 to 21
Hold steady, and leave the roller for later
This is when early itch from new growth can tempt you to trim. No-Shave rules are loose, so a light neckline cleanup is your call. Leave the patchy zones alone so you can see them clearly.
Derma rolling comes up in every beard forum. The best-known evidence is a 2013 pilot trial of 100 men with scalp hair loss. Weekly microneedling plus 5% minoxidil beat minoxidil alone over 12 weeks. That was the scalp, not the face, and no beard trial of rolling turned up in our research.
Do not start a roller in your first month. Get your skin used to minoxidil first, ask a dermatologist, and never roll irritated or broken skin. If you do go ahead later, our derma rolling protocol covers hygiene and spacing.
Week 4 · Nov 22 to 30
Measure, then decide
- On November 30, retake all four photos with the same setup as day 1.
- Compare side by side. Expect visible change from growth length, not from new follicles.
- Log any side effects you had, even mild ones.
- Decide with your clinician whether to continue toward the 4-month checkpoint the label uses.
- Donate, and post your progress if you are raising money with a team.
What to track during the month
A simple log beats memory. Patchy growth fools the eye from day to day, especially under bathroom lights.
| What | How often | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Four-angle photos | Day 1, then weekly | Same light and distance make changes real, not imagined |
| Doses applied | Daily check mark | Missed doses explain a lot later |
| Skin reaction | Daily note | Irritation is a label stop-and-ask sign |
| Dizziness, racing heart, swelling | Any time | These are label reasons to stop and call a doctor |
| Body weight | Weekly | The label flags sudden, unexplained weight gain |
| Pet exposure steps | Every application | Cats are highly sensitive to minoxidil |

Safety: side effects, pets and when to stop
The topical label carries heart-related warnings. It tells you to ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease.
Stop and call a doctor if you notice
- Chest pain, rapid heartbeat, faintness or dizziness
- Sudden, unexplained weight gain
- Swollen hands or feet
- Irritation or redness where you apply it
- Unwanted hair growth
The foam is also extremely flammable, so do not smoke or go near a flame while applying it or right after. Keep it away from your eyes. For a longer read on the heart questions, see our piece on facial minoxidil and cardiovascular safety.
Your cat is the most at-risk person in the house
The ASPCA calls minoxidil extremely dangerous for pets, especially cats, and says even small exposures can be life-threatening. The American Academy of Dermatology notes pets can be exposed by licking treated hair or skin, a pillowcase, a used tissue or the bottle.
A beard is a face your cat wants to rub against. Build these habits:
- Apply in a closed room with pets out, and let the product dry completely before any contact.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after every application.
- Keep pets off your pillow and bedding, and stop chin-licks and face rubs.
- Store the bottle locked away and toss used tissues in a closed bin.
- If you suspect exposure, call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
Gear for the month
You need very little: the minoxidil itself plus basic beard care.
November starter kit
Over-the-counter 5% minoxidil comes as a foam or a liquid. Both are labeled for the scalp, so clear facial use with your clinician first.

Also losing hair on top?
Some men use November to deal with the scalp, too. Keeps offers prescription and over-the-counter scalp hair-loss treatments, including finasteride and minoxidil options, after a short online questionnaire and a provider check. Its site does not market these for beards.

No-Shave, not No-Nut
Let us be clear about the other November challenge. MinoxidilBeards is not asking anyone to do "No Nut November." This site's only rule for the month: skip the razor, not the rest.
Still, the question comes up every year: does abstaining from ejaculation boost testosterone enough to grow a better beard?
The study everyone cites
The source of the claim is a small 2003 study by Jiang and colleagues in the Journal of Zhejiang University Science. It tracked blood testosterone daily in 28 men during abstinence.
Levels barely moved on days 2 to 5. On day 7 they peaked at 145.7% of baseline, and after that the authors saw no regular pattern. In plain terms, a one-time bump in a blood test, in a small group, with no hair measured at all.
How beards actually grow
Facial hair is driven by androgens. Cleveland Clinic describes DHT, which the body makes from testosterone, as the main androgen behind facial and body hair. Genes matter too: men with an inherited enzyme deficiency that blocks DHT production typically do not grow facial hair.
The beard area has its own androgen receptors, and hair follicles work on long cycles. That is why minoxidil trials run 12 to 16 weeks and the label talks in months. A week-long blip in blood levels is not the same thing.
We found no study that measured beard growth during abstinence. The verdict: there is no good evidence that No Nut November grows a better beard. Keep the razor in the drawer, and leave the rest of your life alone.
FAQ
Will I see minoxidil results by the end of November?
Probably not from minoxidil itself. The men's 5% foam label says results may appear at 2 months and some men need at least 4 months. The two placebo-controlled beard trials ran 12 and 16 weeks. Most of what you see by November 30 is existing hair that you let grow out.
Is minoxidil approved for beard growth?
No. Over-the-counter minoxidil is labeled to regrow hair on the top of the scalp, and the label tells you not to apply it to other parts of the body. Using it on the face is off-label, so talk to a clinician first.
Will applying more minoxidil speed things up?
No. The Men's Rogaine foam label states that using more, or using it more often, will not improve results. Extra product only adds residue and more chance of irritation.
Is facial minoxidil safe if I have a cat?
Only with strict precautions. The ASPCA calls minoxidil extremely dangerous for pets, especially cats. Apply it in a closed room, let it dry completely, wash your hands, keep pets off your face and pillow, and call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435 if you suspect exposure.
Does No Nut November help beard growth?
There is no good evidence that it does. A small 2003 study found a one-time rise in blood testosterone around day 7 of abstinence, with no regular pattern afterward. It did not measure hair, and we found no study linking abstinence to beard growth.
What happens if I stop minoxidil on December 1?
On the scalp, the label says continued use is needed to keep regrowth. For beards, follow-up data are thin, and a published review notes that gains may be temporary. Stopping after one month mostly means you never reached the window where results show up.
This is general information, not medical advice. Minoxidil is not approved for use on the face. Talk to a doctor or dermatologist before using it on your beard area, especially if you have heart disease, take blood pressure medication, or have other health conditions. Read the Drug Facts label on any product you buy.
