Happy Head is a hair-loss telehealth service that sells custom prescription formulas, and its help center now describes a dedicated beard product. This is a desk review. We read Happy Head's own pages in October 2026 and compared what they say with drug labels and FDA material. We haven't used the service, we haven't tested the product, and we don't quote user reviews. Where Happy Head doesn't say something, we tell you that too.
- What it offers: an online intake reviewed by a dermatologist, custom formulas compounded and shipped monthly, and a beard product called Topical Rx Beard Formula.
- What stands out: the beard formula, as described in Happy Head's help center, combines 8% minoxidil with finasteride, dutasteride and seven other ingredients. That's far more than the minoxidil-only lotion studied in the best-known beard trial.
- What it doesn't say: that facial use is off-label, anything about heart conditions, pets or household contact, or which states it serves.
- Who it fits: men who want a dermatologist-directed, multi-ingredient formula and are comfortable asking hard questions about the DHT blockers in it.
How the consult model works
According to Happy Head's home page and help center (read October 2026), the process goes like this:
- Choose a treatment and fill out a questionnaire covering age, sex and medical history. The ordering article puts checkout before the photo step.
- Upload photos. The ordering article says a photo ID may also be requested for verification.
- A board-certified dermatologist reviews it. The home page says all of its doctors are board-certified dermatologists who specialize in hair growth. The dermatologist may email you to confirm the prescription or suggest changes.
- The pharmacy prepares the formula and ships it. The help center says formulas are freshly compounded for each customer and shipped by USPS Ground Advantage. It says new orders usually ship a few business days after the questionnaire and photos reach the doctor.
The home page advertises a free consultation. Happy Head's pricing article says eligible orders carry no separate consultation or standard shipping charge, and its how-it-works page says follow-ups are included during treatment. We don't print prices because they change. The pricing article itself says the price shown at checkout is the one that applies, and that the renewal price after any promotion should be checked there.
The formulas, as Happy Head describes them
Happy Head's how-it-works page says it offers over 180 combinations of prescription ingredients. Its FAQ highlights a once-daily liposomal topical with finasteride and minoxidil, which the company says has lower systemic absorption. We found no independent data on facial use of that base. The help center's navigation also lists an "Oral Hair Growth" category. We couldn't open the individual product pages, which block automated reading, so we can't confirm what the oral options contain.
Topical Rx Beard Formula
Happy Head's help-center guide to this product (undated, read October 2026) lists these actives:
| Ingredient (as listed) | Listed strength | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Minoxidil | 8% | OTC minoxidil for men is 5%, and the 2016 beard trial used 3%. |
| Finasteride | 0.25% | A DHT blocker. There's no FDA-approved topical finasteride (see below). |
| Dutasteride | 0.25% | A second DHT blocker. |
| Latanoprost | 0.005% | A prostaglandin analog. |
| Tretinoin | 0.001% | A retinoid; see our tretinoin guide. |
| Cetirizine, melatonin, caffeine, biotin, vitamin D3 | Various | Listed as supporting ingredients. |
The guide says to apply it once daily to the cheeks, jawline, neck and mustache. It says each pump delivers 0.2 mL, with 1 to 2 pumps per area, and that most users see improvement in 3 to 6 months. It lists mild redness or dryness as common side effects. It mentions a "risk-free 6-month guarantee" but doesn't explain the terms. Ask about those terms before you buy.
The FDA states that compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and that it doesn't review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they're sold. Happy Head's FAQ calls its formulas "prescription-grade, FDA-approved medicines," and its beard guide says the formula uses FDA-approved substances. Individual ingredients may come from approved drugs, but a custom combination made by a compounding pharmacy is not itself FDA-approved, and no minoxidil product is approved for the face.
Finasteride, dutasteride and the beard question
This is the part we'd want answered before starting. Finasteride and dutasteride lower DHT, the hormone that drives male-pattern scalp loss. DHT also matters for facial hair. MedlinePlus notes that people with 5-alpha reductase deficiency, who can't make enough DHT, don't develop much facial or body hair.
So putting DHT blockers on the face to grow a beard raises a fair question. The evidence is thin in both directions. The Propecia (oral finasteride 1 mg) label says that in one of its scalp trials, the drug didn't appear to affect non-scalp body hair. The label says nothing about facial hair. We found no published trial of topical finasteride or dutasteride on the beard, and Happy Head's guide cites none.
There's also a safety angle. In April 2025, the FDA alerted patients and providers to risks with compounded topical finasteride. It cited 32 adverse event reports from 2019 to 2024, many describing effects that continued after stopping, such as depression, anxiety and sexual side effects. The alert said there is no FDA-approved topical finasteride, and that the FDA is aware of telemedicine platforms marketing topical finasteride, alone or with minoxidil. The alert didn't name Happy Head, and we're not implying it did.
Happy Head's FAQ says sexual side effects are generally rare and usually resolve. That's the company's position. Weigh it against the FDA alert with your prescriber.
Billing, pausing and cancelling
- Subscription: the ordering article says orders run as a recurring monthly subscription.
- Pause or skip: the home page says you can pause, skip or cancel any time. The pause article says to request a pause through the online contact link or by phone, and that you can move your next order date in your account.
- Cancel: the cancellation article (updated September 2026) says to cancel by phone or email. It also says orders already marked "Processing" and sent to the pharmacy can't be stopped. If you want out, cancel well before your next order date.
- Refunds: the return policy (updated September 2026) offers a reformulation, or a refund if you cancel, for the most recent prescription order. You need to return the newest bottle within 30 days of delivery, in its original packaging, and you pay return shipping. Non-prescription items aren't returnable.
State availability and shipping
We couldn't find a list of states Happy Head serves on any page we could read. Its shipping article says it can't ship internationally. If you're in the U.S., confirm your state during intake before you pay.
What Happy Head doesn't say about facial use
On the pages we read, Happy Head doesn't address:
- Off-label status. Minoxidil is FDA-approved only for the scalp.
- Heart and blood pressure. OTC minoxidil labels say to ask a doctor first if you have heart disease. See our cardiovascular guide.
- Pets. The AAD warns that a few drops of minoxidil can make a cat critically ill. A face is easier for a cat to lick than a scalp. See our pet guide.
- Household contact. The Propecia label warns that women who are or may become pregnant shouldn't handle crushed or broken tablets, because of a risk to a male fetus. The beard guide doesn't address skin contact with a facial product containing two DHT blockers. See our transfer guide.
- Published evidence for this formula. None is cited.
None of these gaps means the product is unsafe. They're the questions to put to your dermatologist. Our prescriber question list has more.
Who it fits, and the alternatives
A reasonable fit if you want a dermatologist to direct a stronger, multi-ingredient formula, you're fine with a monthly subscription, and you'll ask directly about the finasteride and dutasteride, heart history and pets.
Maybe not if you'd rather avoid DHT blockers entirely, want the simplest evidence-matched approach, or don't want a subscription.
Check Happy Head's current beard options
Confirm the formula, state availability, guarantee terms and renewal price at checkout. Facial use is off-label, so ask the dermatologist directly about heart history, DHT blockers and pets.
Alternatives. BiltRx is a men's telehealth brand whose hair page names minoxidil and finasteride. It says its compounded medications come from licensed U.S. 503A pharmacies and are not FDA-approved, and that availability varies by state. It also doesn't mention beards. Our Happy Head vs. BiltRx comparison lines them up. The simplest route is OTC minoxidil, which needs no prescription. Our best minoxidil roundup and prescription explainer cover when that's enough.

Some men look into beard transplants once they've given minoxidil a fair trial. That's surgery, with its own costs and risks, so research the clinic and surgeon carefully. Look into beard transplants in Colombia → Paid link
FAQ
Does Happy Head have a beard product?
Yes. Its help center describes a Topical Rx Beard Formula, listed with 8% minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride, latanoprost, tretinoin and other ingredients, applied once daily. It's a compounded prescription, so it isn't FDA-approved, and facial minoxidil use is off-label.
Is Happy Head's beard formula FDA-approved?
No. The FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and there's no FDA-approved topical finasteride. Some individual ingredients come from approved drugs, but the custom mixture isn't approved, and no minoxidil product is approved for the face.
Can finasteride or dutasteride affect beard growth?
The evidence is limited. DHT plays a role in facial hair, and the Propecia label says oral finasteride didn't appear to affect non-scalp body hair in one trial. We found no published beard trial of topical DHT blockers. Ask your prescriber.
How do I cancel Happy Head?
Its help center says to cancel by phone or email. Orders already marked Processing and sent to the pharmacy can't be stopped, so cancel well before your next order date.
How much does Happy Head cost?
We don't print prices because they change. Happy Head's pricing article says the price shown at checkout applies, and that eligible orders have no separate consultation or standard shipping charge. Check the renewal price too.
Is Happy Head available in every state?
We couldn't find a state list on the pages we read. Its shipping article says it doesn't ship internationally. Confirm your state during intake.
